Ace O Nerae:
French title: Jeu, Set et Match

The story of a budding tennis player.

This reminds me a little of Roses of Versailles, animation-wise, so I guess they must have had some of the same staff. Not bad, even though the quality of the animation is very low. I'm afraid that's gonna be a given for most of the series on this page.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Aishite Night
French title: Lucile, Amour et Rock'n'Roll

Love triangle between two members of a rock band and a young waitress who becomes friends with the little brother of one of them.

The version I watched on French TV was edited so that the episodes were only about 15 min. I also kept missing episodes, and didn't see more than fifteen of them, but I had a feeling that if I could watch all of it and knew what was going on I would like it very much. Fun chara designs, considering half the cast form a rock-band, and they have very colorful hair. Me, I think I'd have a few qualms about falling for a pink-haired guy, but hey.

Akage no Ann

Ann is an orphan girl with a big imagination who gets adopted by a very strict but good-hearted woman and her softie brother. After a difficult start, the three live happily, and Ann makes friends with some of the children in her class.

This is a beautiful adaptation of the famous book Anne of Green Gables. Normal, it was done by...Isao Takahata, of Studio Ghibli fame. This series is the first anime of many that you will see on this page adapted from classic children's novels. Generally, such anime are made by the studio Nippon Animation and are called meisaku, but I'm not sure this particular series was created by Nippon Animation. The animation quality for the meisaku anime is generally very high, as is the story content, and these are highly recommended if you were a fan of these novels.

Urd Urd: I recommend this series!

Alice in Wonderland

Following a huge rabbit that appears out of nowhere during her mother's tea party, Alice ends up in a strange and wondrous land.

This is a very amusing and colorful adaptation which keeps the bizarre originality of the novel.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Urd Urd: I recommend this series!

Alps Monogatari-Watashi no Annette
French title: Dans les Alpes avec Annette

Annette is a young girl who lives in the Alps.

One of the older Nippon Animation series. Not particularly interesting, and the character design is unattractive.
Rating: 1 out of 5

Anime San Jushi
French title: Sous le Signe des Mousquetaires

The tale of the Three Musketeers in anime!

Not very historically correct and the second half of the series isn't based on the famous book, but this is nicely done. I think this owes its appeal mostly to the original novel, but the character designs complement Dumas' musketeers very well.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Urd Urd: I recommend this series!

Ashita e Free Kick
French title: Graine de Champion

Moving to Italy where he is supposed to go to university and then take over his grandfather's business corporation, our green-haired hero discovers that he has a talent for soccer and accidentally joins a local team.

And this is the first of the soccer anime that you will see on this page! This is my favorite among those, because the characters aren't children. I found it had a nice atmosphere to it, and both the Italian coast town they lived in and the characters were drawn nicely. Very good.

Attacker You!
French title: Jeanne et Serge

A young girl enters her school's volleyball team because she wants to impress the captain of the boys' volleyball team whom she has a crush on. Discovering she is very talented, she enters the National Tournament and then the Japanese Olympic Team.

Wow! Apparently this anime became so popular in some European countries that they had to cancel it, because girls started joining local volleyball clubs in huge numbers! That's the thing with Japanese sports anime, even if you aren't into a particular sport, they can make you so! This is a nice example of the genre.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Biniky the Pink Dragon
French title: Biniky Le Dragon Rose

Following a ship-wreck, a small boy finds himself on an island governed by a young mermaid and becomes friends with a pink dragon.

An ancient children's series. Not for over eight years olds.
Rating: 1 out of 5

Bush Baby

The tale of a young girl living in Kenya at the beginning of the century.

Wildlife and geography are depicted in nice detail. The relationship between the girl and her black servant is touching. I think this is probably the only anime to take place in Africa.
Rating: 2 out of 5

Chiisana Vicking Vicke!
French title: Wickie le Viking

Vic is the young son of the chief of a Viking clan, and it's usually thanks to his clever tricks that the clan manages to get out of difficult situations.

Even though it is very very old, this series is funny and has this adorable look to it that children will love.
Rating: 2 out of 5

Conan Boy of the Future
French title: Conan le Fils du Futur

The fight a group of people give in a barren, flooded world to get rid of Lepka, who wants to use much-needed energy for his own purposos.

Conan is an early work by Miyazaki. Like most of his accomplishments, it is environmentalist, but I found it a bit boring.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Cyborg 009

Nine humans have been transformed into cyborgs by an evil organisation, to be used as weapons. The cyborgs have other ideas.

Another old sci-fi series, however this one is above standard. For a start, it possesses a truly international and likeable cast of characters (even an African). I read somewhere that the author of Cyborg 009 was one of the first and best mangaka around. A cool show.

Urd Urd: I recommend this series!

Ganbare Kickers!
French title: But Pour Rudy

The Kickers are a soccer team who are the worst in their region, but things start looking up when a talented player arrives in town and joins them.

Your standard soccer anime, this will appeal most to children and soccer fans.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Haha o Tazunete Senzenri

Little Marco travels all over Europe to find his mother.

Isao Takahata worked on this TV series and it is supposed to be a classic. I found it badly animated, boring and preachy.
Rating: 1 out of 5

Hai! Step Jun
French title: Vas-y Julie!

Jun is a young mechanical genius. She has even built a robot that follows her everywhere, and uses her inventions to seduce the (much older) boy she likes (it never works).

This is a nice children's comedy.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Hananoko Lun Lun
French title: Le Tour du Monde de Lydie

A young girl on a mission to find the "seven colored flower" tours the world accompanied by a talking cat and a dog. Sometimes she uses her locket which transforms her into whatever she wants using the power of flowers to accomplish her goals.

Very nice story with good animation. The best part is the portrayal of all the different people and the different countries, and it's nice to get a fairy-tale ending sometimes, especially when you grow to like a character so much.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Urd Urd: I recommend this series!

Heidi

Heidi is a little girl living in the Alps with her grandfather. They are simple people, so when Heidi moves to town to live with an invalid rich kid, she has trouble fitting in.

Very old children's classic based on the famous novel.
Rating: 2 out of 5

Himitsu no Akko-chan
French title: Caroline

Akko possesses a make-up compact that lets her change her appearence at will.

Standard magical-girl anime, but I liked it. Don't go for the first series (very old) or the third (new, but badly done).
Rating: 3 out of 5

Ienaki ko Rami
French title: Remi Sans Famille

A travelling musician buys Remi from his poor parents and teaches him the ways of life. However he dies, and Remi, penniless, has to work doubly hard to survive.

Adapted from the famous French novel "Sans Famille", this series, just like the said novel, is very sad. In fact it is so sad after a while you don't want to watch it anymore.
Rating: 2 out of 5

Jeanie

A young white girl living in the south of the States at the beginning of the century.

Not very historically correct, and it got boring. Children might be interested in it.
Rating: 2 out of 5

Jumping

There is no story. Our point of view keeps jumping up and down and travels the whole world, to finish where it started.

This short film is a more artistic (artistic in the sense acclaimed by critics and incomprehensible to the public) work by the father of manga, Osamu Tezuka.
Rating: 2 out of 5

Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman

Five young people with a big robot battle evil to save the Earth.

Sound like Voltron? Forget this. And why do they dress up as birds anyway?
Rating: 1 out of 5

Karasutengu Kabuto

The fight between Kabuto, the last warrior of a line, and his arch-enemy. Kabuto is accompanied by a beautiful woman and three male humanic beings, who are gods symbolising the cardinal points.

A great if somewhat dark setting in medieval Japan, cool characters, all interlaced with legends and mythology. As a side note, there seems to be another anime out there called Kabuto, which is apparently different since Kabuto is a loner this time.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Urd Urd: I recommend this series!

La Seine no Hoshi

Simone is a young woman who was adopted by a poor couple who had another older son. Simone rages against injustice and at night parades as the masked fencer La Seine.

Situated during the French Revolution, the story seems complex, but the animation suffers from age.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Lady!!
French title: Georgie

Lin has promised to her mother before the latter's death to become a lady. A rich family adopts her and there are numerous obstacles in the way, but she will be helped by her two step-brothers, one of whom is in love with her.

Another one of those boring old shojos. The appeal of blondes with two ponytails, with the exception of Usagi, will forever be incomprehensible to me.
Rating: 1 out of 5

Little Men
French title: Petite Bonne Femme

Jo's boarding school houses some dozen boys and two girls. This series shows us a glimpse of their daily life.

Contrary to what it's name suggests, this is not a continuation of Little Women, as only the first part of the latter novel was adapted. The Japanese name of this series is quite a mouthful, so I can't be bothered to write it. Quality Nippon Animation.
Rating: 4 out of 5

Little Women

The life of the four March sisters and their angelic mother while their father is off fighting in the Civil War.

Nice adaptation of the first part of the famous novel.
Rating: 4 out of 5

Maho no Star Magical Emi
French title: Emi Magique

May's family is in the entertaining business, and May is given a magical bracelet for one year so that she can learn how to become a magician. May chooses to transform into a singer/magician called Emi.

Again, standard magical girl fare, but it is well done and Emi's tricks are fun to watch, not to mention the fact that she's a cool-looking character.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Mahotsukai Sally

Princess Sally has magic powers and is sent to Earth to live with a family to learn how humans live.

The mother of all magical girl anime. Badly done and boring even for children. More for anime historians.
Rating: 1 out of 5

Majokko Tickle

Tickle is a magical girl.

Horrifying! That's the only adjectif I can think of to qualify the chara design, the rest isn't all that great either. Avoid this at all costs.
Rating: 1 out of 5

Meitantei Holmes

The adventures of Sherlock Holmes and his associate Dr. Watson, starting with their first ever meeting.

Hayao Miyazaki worked on this italo-japanese co-production and directed six episodes. The series is not as serious as Conan Doyle's works, mostly because of the cute character design. This series might not look like Japanese anime because all the characters have canine faces. The mystery solving is entertaining. Meitantei Holmes is for the people who love dogs, Hayao Miyazaki, Sherlock Holmes and detective stories.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Urd Urd: I recommend this series!

Moero! Top Sticker
French title: L'Ecole des Champions

A talented soccer player and how he becomes the captain of an international soccer team to play in the World Junior Championships.

Nicely done, again with nice depiction of Italian life. However, I found the main characters unrealistically competitive. These teenagers don't just dream of being the best player in the world, they're ready to practically kill each other for it! I remember there was one episode where the animation was disastrous, but the rest is OK.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Mori wa Ikite Iru
French title: La Foret Enchantee

Anya is a poor girl with a heart of gold who lives near a forest with her mean step-mother and step-sister. She has to find spring flowers in the middle of winter for the capricious princess of the state.

Beautiful, heartwarming fairy tale. I really loved this, though the main character is inhumanly angelic.
Rating: 5 out of 5
Urd Urd: I recommend this series! *pause* But webmaster? I'm sick of all recommending all these kiddy shows! Where is all the love and sex?
Ajax: Just shut up, Urd.

Nils Holgersson

To stop him torturing animals, the young Nils Holgersson is reduced in size to a dwarf by an elf. Unable to show himself to his parents, the Swedish boy befriends some wild geese and hitches a ride with them across the country as they migrate.

This is such a cool series! And even though it is old, the animation is still pretty good.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Peter Pan

The adventures of Peter Pan, Wendy and her brothers in Never Never Land.

We have all seen this so many times that it gets boring after a while. I have probably known three or four different adaptations of Barrie's book, and this one doesn't really shine.
Rating: 2 out of 5

Pika-don

This short film is about the atom-bombing of Hiroshima.

Not being a commercial product, this anime is very different from what us foreigners are used to seeing. The horror and tragedy of the bomb is shown in a few simple images that really shock the viewer. I feel it is not appropriate to rate this product as, unlike other anime, it isn't made to entertain.

Ribbon no Kishi

A princess has to act as a prince to keep a bad guy from inheriting the throne.

Ribbon no Kishi is one of the first shojo anime ever made. It is interesting to see how the style has evolved. The story is adapted from one of Osamu Tezuka's mangas and keeps up with his usual vivid, exciting storytelling.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Robin Hood

The adventures in the Sherwood Forest of a fourteen year old Robin Hood.

A nice adaptation of the story with rejuvenated heroes, and a bit of magic thrown in. I quite like the character design.
Rating: 2 out of 5

Sandy Bell
French title: Sandy Jonquille

A young girl travels the world as a reporter for an English newspaper. During her journeys, she falls in love with a young man and of course, someone else tries to steal the boy from her.

Boring shojo with the ugliest heroine I've seen. How can anyone like her? And the fact that everyone, even the guys, cries non-stop is extremely irritating.
Rating: 1 out of 5

Sanga Sho Densetsu: Aoi Umi no Elfie

Elfie, a young girl of the people who live under the sea, has been brought up as a human and must now fight to bring peace and stop the destruction of the oceans.

This is one of your standard post-apocalyptic environmental anime. However, I just loved the story, which was very touching, especially at the end. The heroine was one of the prettiest anime girls I've seen, IMO.
Rating: 5 out of 5
Urd Urd: I recommend this series!

Shokoshi Ceddy

After his father's death, Cedric learns that he is the heir to an English Earl and has to move from the States to England. However, the grandfather is very strict and doesn't like Cedric's mother.

This was a boring anime. Try a few episodes if you liked the novel "Little Lord Fauntleroy" by F. Burnett.
Rating: 1 out of 5

The Secret Garden

After her parents' death, Mary arrives at England at the castle of her rich uncle, who has lived in complete depression since the death of his wife. Bit by bit, Mary starts opening up and making friends with the local folk.

Based on the famous novel, this charming anime is especially for fans of the book.
Rating: 3 out of 5

The Trapp Family Singers
French title: Les Enfants du Capitaine Trapp

Maria, a young exuberant nun, becomes the nanny of the seven children of the Count Trapp. Little by little, the children and the Baron get to like her, but the Nazis cause trouble for the family.

Based on the novel based on which was made the famous movie "The Sound of Music". If you liked the movie you will like the series.
Rating: 2 out of 5

The Twins at St. Clare
French title: Les Jumelles a St. Clare

Pat and Isabelle, the spoiled twins, are sent to a boarding school by their parents to learn humility.

Adapted from one of Enid Blyton's famous girls' boarding school stories, this series offers "entertainment with literary value" and is perfect for children.
Rating: 4 out of 5

Uchu Densetsu Ulysses 31

The story of one man's voyage across space to get back home.

A futuristic adaptation of the Greek epic Odyssey, this is a very interesting, captivating story.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Voltron

Five young people battle evil in a robot with detachable parts.

Another "five is a cool number" anime. You might like it if you're into mecha.
Rating: 2 out of 5

Wedding Peach

Momoko and her friends transform into magical girls to battle ridiculous villains.

A Sailor Moon clone. This is silly (fighting in a wedding dress?), has incredibly stupid villains and lacks any originality. However, it is nicely animated for a TV series.
Rating: 1 out of 5

Zorro

A Japanese production of the famous story, with Diego being this time a young lad of 18.

This is a nice adaptation, with an appropriately dashing hero, even though a blonde Zorro seems very conspicuous... The music isn't half bad, either.
Rating: 3 out of 5

 Introduction

Urd

Ah... Thanks for getting me outta that temple. If I see that Skuld brat once again I'm gonna scream.

Uh right, I have a job to do here, don't I? So, where is the potential couple? *pause*
What? No couple? So what do I do? *pause*
Oh right. Be sexy and point out the good shows. Gotcha.
